Conversion/Revision Bariatric Surgery

Not every weight loss journey follows a straight line. Some people experience unexpected outcomes after their first bariatric procedure – including weight regain, side effects, or complications that impact their health or quality of life. In these situations, revision surgery may offer a way forward.

At WLS, we provide a range of laparoscopic revision procedures for people who’ve had previous bariatric operations and now require further surgical support.

Why conversion/revision surgery may be needed

Conversion/revision surgery is typically considered when:

  • A previous operation has led to complications (e.g. severe reflux, obstruction, or nutritional concerns)
  • Weight loss has not been sufficient or long-term weight regain has occurred
  • A different procedure is now better suited to your health profile
  • Additional surgery is required for unrelated conditions, such as hernias or gallstones, which can be addressed at the same time

It’s important to understand that needing conversion/revision surgery is not a failure – it’s simply a new stage in your care plan. The most important step is determining the safest, most effective path forward.

What types of conversion/revisions are possible?

The type of revision recommended will depend on the procedure you’ve already had and what your goals are moving forward. Examples may include:

  • Converting a gastric band to a sleeve or bypass
  • Converting a sleeve gastrectomy to gastric bypass
  • Revising a Roux-en-Y or mini bypass to address complications
  • Combining bariatric surgery with other procedures (e.g. gallbladder removal)

All conversion/revision surgeries are performed laparoscopically where possible, minimising recovery time.

What to expect

  • Your surgeon will conduct a full assessment, including medical imaging and nutritional review
  • If appropriate, we’ll coordinate additional investigations or referrals
  • Your personalised care plan will outline any revision options, risks, and benefits
  • Post-operative care is tailored to ensure long-term safety and success

We take revision surgery seriously – and we’ll never recommend it unless it’s the right step for you.
